Bedrooms need a special kind of lighting. A table lamp on the bedside table is, unless space has to be saved, usually better than a light fixed on the wall, where your head may get between it and the book. But the old system of having one ceiling light hung immediately over the dressing-table is ugly and inefficient.

If you have one ceiling point (ex: ceiling medallions) in a room, it must be in the middle or the whole balance of the room is destroyed and, as dressing-tables are not put in the middle of the room, bedroom ceiling lights trying to do two jobs spoil the room. If you want a general light in the bedroom have either a central light or wall brackets, but light the dressing-table separately.

The best way of lighting a dressing-table is to have one lamp on each side of the mirror, but one on the top will do. For this, lengths of tube light are the most efficient. They can be fixed on the side or back of the mirror frame. This should, except in large rooms, also be enough general light. As an addition, which is admittedly a luxury, strip lights in all built-in cupboards are more useful than a general light, and they can be fitted to go on when the door is opened.

- Dining-rooms: either indirect ceiling or indirect wall lights.
- Living-rooms: indirect wall lights, pelmet lights, indirect and direct floor and table standards.
- Bedrooms: direct or indirect table lamps for bedside, direct wall light over mirror and dressing-table, indirect ceiling or wall lights for general lighting if necessary in addition.
